The engine (1) has a two stage turbocharger which consists of two compressors (6,8) in series which are driven by two exhaust gas turbines (3,5) in series. Each turbine drives one of the compressors. The turbines and compressors are so arranged that the high pressure turbine (3) drives the low pressure compressor (6) and the low pressure turbine (5) drives the high pressure compressor (8). This combination enables the engine to respond more rapidly to load changes because an increased exhaust flow acts on the inlet side compressor first.
