The vertical lathe has a horizontal main guide for two independently controlled cross-slides, each having a rotary capstan tool head for internal and/or external machining operations. The axes about which the tool heads rotate extend horizontally in a vertical plane parallel to the main guide. Each cross-slide can have in addition to these tool heads for internal and external machining a further rotary capstan head for external machining, outside the plane in which the tools of the first heads work.
