A method of adsorptive removal of combustible constituents from gas mixts. consists of rendering the mixt. inert before it is treated by the further addn. of a combustible gas. Pref. the total concn. of combustible gases is raised to least 50% above the upper explosion limit. In a variant, additional components are added to raise the combustible gas concentration to this level. Pref. before each operation the adsorber bed is flushed through with a combustible gas. Whereas in prior art methods of rendering the mixt. inert before removing the combustible constituents, it was the practice to dilute with air to lower the concn. to below the lower explosion limit, the new method operates in the opposite direction by raising it to above the upper explosion limit. This results in a considerable redn. in the quantity to be treated and consequently in the size of the adsorber bed required.
