The failsafe parking brake for a vehicle with pneumatic brakes has a manual release which has to be operated before the vehicle can be moved, after starting up. The valve has a blocking element (14) released by a plunger (19) linked to the control knob (18). After release the pressure in the brake line (4) operates on a second element (20) to hold the valve open. The valve ensures that the spring loaded parking brakes are not released if the driver starts the engine and leaves the cab, allowing the vehicle to roll down a hill. The manual release is simple to operate, and has to be used only after the engine is started.
