The process uses ignition pulses (UZ) which are formed cyclically in the control unit by comparison of a periodical auxiliary function (U-H) with a switching threshold (U-S). The idle time between the instant, at which the switching-on command is transmitted to the control unit, and the appearance of the first ignition pulse is eliminated. This is attained by stopping the cyclic generation of the ignition pulse during the operational break interval of the rectifier. Then all ignition pulse generators (K) are energised into a ready state. The generators are energised beyond the inverter limit position. During the operational break interval the amplitude of the periodical auxiliary function may be reduced below the switching threshold. Alternately, the switching threshold may be raised above the amplitude of the periodical auxiliary function.
