An oil throughput meter for oil-fired domestic heating systems consists of a flow detector which converts the oil flow into a rotational or reciprocal mechanical motion. The motion is counted and the number of rotations or reciprocations displayed. The meter gives direct readings, is extremely simply constructed, and can be fitted retrospectively to existing oil throughput meters without great expense. A permanent magnet (14) attached to the rotating or reciprocating part (4) operates a switch mechanism magnetically one for each rotation or reciprocation. The switch mechanism is connected to the brought out connections of the addition or equals keys of a conventional pocket calculator mounted at a distance from the switch. The magnetically operated switch may be a read switch or Hall generator element.
