The personnel rope-lowering mechanism is particularly for use as an emergency exit from a shelf-loading machine. The holding rope is stored on a drum, whose unwinding speed is automatically restricted by an internal hydraulic brake. A flow restrictor is provided in the brake hydraulic system, the brake piston, driven from the rope drum, moving in a hydraulic cylinder. A pair of brake pistons (23) are provided, working in stationary cylinders (16) and acting against a cam (20) rotating with the drum (9). The pressure chambers (21) of the cylinders are connected together by the restrictor and the cam profile is such that the pistons travel in opposite directions all the time.
