Cam actuated drum brakes are widely used in automotive braking systems. Anti-lock brake systems operate by intermittently releasing braking pressure to avoid locking of wheels. This paper presents kinematic analysis and experimental evaluation of a novel linkage mechanism that provides an anti-lock like effect to such cam actuated drum brakes. The parameters defined in this experiment are the braking force applied by the operator, profile of cam and the cycle frequency for intermittent brake release. The effect of defined parameters on release of braking pressure and its characteristics are studied in this paper. Based on the experimental study, analysis and testing it is established that the linkage system exhibits technical effect so as to provide anti-lock effect to a cam actuated drum brake system. The results from the experiment establish the potential of the linkage mechanism which if developed, can be adapted or retrofitted to any cam actuated drum brake assembly.
