Stranding machine spool holder - has dual fluid-pressure system to operate mechanical locking action and pre-stress frame

Spool holder for radial stranding machines, spool winding machines, etc., has two independent fluid-pressure systems, pneumatic or hydraulic, to close and to open a mechanical locking device, and which also provide pre-stressing of the frame of the holder. The locking device comprises a rotatable castellated ring which is rotated under the action of a coil spring to lock behind a similarly-profiled section of the inner surface of the hub. The castellations form a series of chambers which can be pressurised by the working fluid to unlock the ring against the pressure of the spring. In one bearing is a compression spring acting axially on the spool via the bearing, which is compressed by the second fluid system acting axially on the spool via a pressurised cylinder in the opposite bearing. The spool is securely locked in the holder, and safe from accidental release. The system can be remotely operated, and is suitable for use in a fully-automated machine.
