The flipper has a moulded base (1) of rubber or plastics with a recess (6) on the upper side to fit the foot. On each side are arms (7a, 7b), extending forwards and diverging outwards. Each side has a slot for the raised bead (9a, 9b) along the edge of the swimming surface (4). This is a rigid piece of plastic (2), approx. twice the length of the normal swimmer's foot. It is paddle shaped, its smaller end entering a pocket under the base and secured by screws. The wider end is used for propulsion and has longitudinal flat bottomed grooves (3) alternately each side which permit transverse flexing (5a, 5b).
