Semi-rigid plastic covers for automobile bumpers - for progressive elastic deformation in resistance to low speed impact

The parent patent described profiles of plastic materials such as polypropylene for use as deformable covers for automobile bumpers of metal. This addition describes covers characterised by relatively strong borders which support a more flexible central section standing clear of the concealed metal bumper bar. The link zones between the border and central zones of the cover are designed to flex and provide a progressive elastic collapse if subjected to low speed impact. Pref. the link zones are relatively thinwall, concave subprofiles integral with the main cover. Pref. the edges of the covers are extruded by stiff panels which cantilever above and below the rims of the metal bumpers, and the ends of the covers are cranked to wrap-round the ends of the basic bumper profile.
