Foamed resin moulding prodn. - by extruding and foaming resin into a number of strands, melting the strands together and feeding into a confined take=up zone

A foamed resin (I) moulding is prepd. using an extruder having a channel with a nozzle and a number of openings in a die by (a) allowing a (I) mixt. to flow through a foaming zone, the (I) mixt. being maintained at above its m.pt., (b) dividing the mixt. into a number of streams, the cross section of these streams being 5-30% of the cross section of the outlet of the extrusion zone, (c) feeding the stream leaving the exit zone into a confing zone which is maintained at a temp. =30 degrees C lower than the temp. of the (I) streams before the extruder outlet to form a number of soft, foamed (I) strands, (d) contacting the strands with each other to melt them together and forma a bonded, foamed (I) mass while simultaneously removing the gases formed during extrusion and foaming, (e) feeding the bonded compsn. into an unconfined zone to allow further foaming while the compsn. is still soft, (f) feeding the foamed mass into a confined take up zone with a smaller cross section than the (I) mass and (g) cooling the moulding.
