The variable speed transmission has pulleys each comprising two conical cheek plates on an axle, one plate (20) being axially slidable against blade return springs (23) and in response to centrifugal weighting (36). The blade spring effect is provided by a diaphragm (21) of which the periphery constitutes a belleville spring (22) and from which radial fingers (23) extend to bear on a fixed counter washer (25). Centring and circumferential lock is provided by washer lugs (30) engaging rectangular windows (32) in the fingers (23), hooked retaining straps (33) also securing and centring the diaphragm (21) on the cheek.
