The speed control system for a railway vehicle uses a continuous monitoring system to register data regarding the vehicle speed and to calculate a parabolic curve for the braking conditions. A part of the data is obtained from a fixed point to establish a set of speed values for the vehicle. The shape of the curve thus established follows a fixed curve. This curve establishes the next value of a set of values which determines the curve. Below a predetermined minimum speed the nominal values can be used instead of the length of travel while braking. In calculating the parabolic curve used for the length of travel, the braking time is allowed for.
