The water lifting pump includes a shaft (16) moved axially by a lever (7) attached both to the centre of the shaft and to a pivot. As the lever is moved one region (5a) is increased in volume, while a second region (5b) reduces in volume. The two pump chambers (5a,5b) communicate with two similar chambers (10a,10b) at a lower level below the water surface. Changes in the volumes of these chambers cause water to be drawn in and out of third immersed chambers (17a,17b).
