Starter motor for small motor-cycle engine - is powered from batteries and drives engine through centrifugal clutch

The electric starter motor is for a small motor-cycle or moped engine and has permanent magnets (17)(18) forming the poles with an armature (26) mounted on a shaft (24). The shaft (24) is fitted with a flywheel (14) which drives a disc (29) through resilient bushes (12). This disc carries pins (9) which support two diametrically opposite swinging arms (33) fitted with friction pads (31). When the motor is connected to the batteries (39) it rotates at a sufficient speed to cause the arms (33) to swing outwards under the effect of centrifugal force and drive the engine flywheel (8) through the friction pads (31).
