The electromagnetic pump transports electrically conducting liquids by setting uo a varying electromagnetic field in the liquid thus inducing currents in it which interact with the electromagnetic field to produce a force which moves the liouid. A polyphase winding (14) wound on a magnetic core (12) is electrically supplied so that a rotating field (f) is set up in the space between the winding and the outer case of the pump. The liquid enters the pump, is set in rotational motion around the polyphase winding and emerges into a volute diffuser (16) which is shaped to increase fluid pressure.
