A machine for removing surface coating comprises platelets free in rotation each about an axis itself driven in a circular rotation movement. The platelets take a radial orientation under the effect of centripetal force and strike the coating to be removed with their ends while giving way under excessively violent shocks. Pref. the machine has two parallel cheeks driven in rotation by a motor, the platelets being situated between these two cheeks. The axis about which each platelet is free in rotation is formed of two half axes immobilised in translation w.r.t. the cheeks. The machine has a hood in which the coating powdered by the shock of the platelets is confined, a flexible skirt preventing the powders being thrown out of the hood, which has a device for sucking out the powdered coating. A guide adjustable in height allows a predetermined thickness of the layer to be removed during a pass. The machine allows the removal of any surface coating e.g. paint, plaster, cement, from any surface, concrete, steel, wood. It is partic. applicable in the nuclear industry to the decontamination of wall coatings by scrapping off the contaminated superficial layer. It allows more rapid removal than existing methods, allows a desired thickness of a coating to be removed giving a good surface condition and does not create additional radioactive effluents.
