In TiCl4 prodn. by chlorinating a granulated raw material (I) contg. titaniferous and carboniferous material in a fluidised bed, the fluidised bed is formed by an upstream of Cl2 and a downstream of (I) and solid carboniferous material (II), which are added in such amts. that the fluidised bed contains ca. 3 vol.pts. (I) to 1 vol.pt. (II). Pref. (I) contains 72-74 wt.% titaniferous material, 24-18 wt.% carboniferous material and 4-8 wt.% sulphite cellulose liquor. TiCl4 is used in the mfr. of Ti, which is widely used for equipment for the chemical, shipbuilding, machine, aircraft, paint and lacquer industries. Uniform distribution of Cl2 throughout the reaction zone is ensured, which increases the productivity and simplifies the technology of the process and gives an increased yield of TiCl4 more cheaply than usual.
