TiCl4 prodn. involves the simultaneous introduction of a countercurrent stream of raw material (I) contg. titaniferous and carbinferous material in Cl2 and an additional Cl2 stream into a bed of carboniferous material (II) at 600-700 deg.C, where reaction takes place, (II) being added continuously in an amt. of over 1/3 the vol. of the reaction zone. Pref. a titaniferous (oxy)chloride pulp is introduced into the reaction zone every 3-10 s in countercurrent to added (II) at a rate of max. 0.8 m/s. TiCl4 is used in the mfr. of Ti, which is widely used for equipment for the chemical, shipbuilding, machine, aircraft, paint and lacquer industries. Uniform distribution of Cl2 throughout the reaction zone is ensured, which increases the productivity and simplifies the technology of the process and gives an increased yield of TiCl4 more cheaply than usual.
