Surface-active cationic triester phosphates have formula ((R10)(R20)(R30)P:O)3X (I) where R1, R2 and R3 each has formula (R4R5R6N-R7) (II) or (R4-CO-NR8-(CH2)n-NR5R6-R7-) (III), in which R4, R5 and R6 are 1-22C alkyl, alkenyl, hydroxyalkyl or aralkyl or a polyoxyalkyl ether gp., provided that at least one of the R4, R5 and R6 gps. contains at least 6C, or R5 and R6 together form a heterocyclic gp. with the bonded N atom. R7 is 2-12C alkylene in mono- or polyoxyalkylene, opt. substd. by an alkyl, alkoxy, OH or hydroxyalkyl gp. contg. up to 10 C. R8 is H or alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, alkenyl or cycloalkyl contg. up to 7 C or polyoxyalkylated hydroxyalkyl contg. up to 10 C; n is integer 1-10 and X is an anion. (I) are used in hair-care compsns., e.g. as conditioners to facilitate combing out and in shampoos. (I) where one of R4, R5 and R6 contains over 16C facilitate the combing out of wet or dry hair. (I) are compatible with anionic amphoteric and nonionic tensides. (II) where R4, R5 or R6, and (III) where R4 contains 4-18C chain, form cpds. (I) having bacteriostatic or bactericidal properties.
