Water-sol. or -dispersible cpds. (I) contg. alkylene oxide units and quat. ammonium gps. are claimed; (I) are obtd. by quaternisation of tert. amines of formula R1R2R3N (II) with 1-22C alkyl halides, benzyl halides, di-(1-22C alkyl) sulphates, tri-(1-22C alkyl) phosphates, 1-22C alkyl tosylates and/or epoxy cpds. (III), followed by reaction with epihalohydrins and reaction of the cpds. obtd. (opt. in combination with halohydrins contg. no quat. ammonium gps. (IV)) with ammonia, 1-22C alkylamines, aliphatic di- and/or poly-amines and/or amino-sugars (V); R' = (AO)-H (with AO = 1-95 alkylene oxide units, comprising 0-60 C2H4O units (EO) and 0-35 C3H6O units (PO)); R2, R3 = R' or 1-22C alkyl with or without OH, NR4R5 and/or NHCOR6 gps. (with R4, R5 = H or 1-4C alkyl; R6 = 1-21C alkyl).
