Wire cable provided with radial vanes - to reduce visible wake in marine applications such as the towing of sonar detectors

Cable wound from metal wires has an outer layer formed by a helical winding of e.g. eighteen round wires (I). In the cable, just below wires (I) are thin wires used to locate tape, ribbon or foils which extend radially outwards from the cable. The tape, ribbon or foil may consist of metal sheet or strip, or synthetic material. Tape, ribbon or foil forms radial vanes used esp. on submarine cables to reduce the visible wake of such cables when the latter are employed e.g. on a submarine for towing sonar appts., or for mine-sweeping. Vanes are easily added during cable mfr., and have a low cost.
