Expansion joint for suspended roof slabs - has wide layer of hot poured elastomeric-rubber-bitumen over gap with central zone de-bonded

The sealed joint may accommodate the relative thermal movement of two suspended slabs (1,2) in building construction, using a part-bonded cover strip (8) with appropriate elastic properties. An expansion gap is provided between two transverse slab (1,2) ends, bridged by a thermo-setting layer (8) of an elastomeric-rubber-bitumen mixture. The layer (8) width is some twelve times that of the gap, its central zone (7) being debonded. Its flank zones are bonded to slabs (1,2). Angle irons (3,4) under flashings (5,6) may be used to confine the in situ hot-poured layer, and specific dimensions are calculated in the light of anticipated thermal movements.
