The hydroelectric station consists of a closed loop of chambers or basins positioned side by side and interconnected by turbine passages. The basins are pref. artificial in metal or concrete, the passages being horizontal. The basin floors may be approximately at the same level with the exception of one basin providing the fall. One basin (2) is deeper than the remainder such that the passage (9) supplying it provides a natural fall (14). The water from this basin is taken up by a pump (15) and passed to the next basin (3). The pumping energy may be solar, wind or may be taken from one of the turbines. The station may use a local river etc. as part of its loop. Overflow of a basin is arranged to be taken up by succeeding basins.
