A striker mechanism for the firing pin of a humane killer or piveting gun of the type using an explosive cartridge, has an end pivoted actuating lever. A single, continuous depression of the lever produces the following sequence; (1) a dog plate linked to the lever engages its dog catch in a channel in the shank of the firing pin. (2) The engaged dog plate displaces the firing pin shank axially away from the cartridge housing, loading a spring as it moves. (3) the leading end of the dog plate encounters a lifting stud. The plate is profiled and pivoted to ride up the stud, disengaging the dog catch from the shank channel just as the spring is fully loaded. (4) the spring projects the firing pin in the direction of the cartridge housing. The humane killer or riveting gun can be loaded and fired with a single, one-handed, continuous movement of the actuating lever. It is safe, because it cannot be left in the loaded condition.
