A laser (1) emits a beam (2) in the direction of a particle (3) and the diffused light beams (4,5,6) at angles (theta) w.r.t. the incident beam (2) are detected. The beams pass through diaphragms (9,11,17) and lenses (8,10,16) and the outer beams are detected by photomultipliers (7,15) while the centre beam is separated (12) into two wavelengths for detection by photomultipliers (13,14). The photomultiplier outputs are applied to a data acquisition unit (18) to determine relative luminous energies of the input. A second parallel beam (20) and photomultiplier (22) connected to a spectral analyser (25) determine Doppler frequency and hence the speed. The system does not disturb the fluid flow when it is effectuating measurements.
