A programmed labeller for packed goods has an array of heated points on a platform (1) which is pressed against the pack (5). The points are selectively heated to burn a point pattern into the packing. The platform is indexed by a programmed control. The labeller uses no paint or other marking material. It marks a wide range of packing material and operates with low cost. The burnt markings are difficult to alter or erase and are not affected by weathering.
