An arrangement for increasing the mobility of an object in a solid medium by exciting elastic deformations in its outer skin is applicable to ships moving through ice, sinking piles and thrust tubes in construction of foundations and mining or tunnelling. The effectiveness is much greater than that of conventional methods whilst the necessary power is minimal from the external energy source. This is achieved using a simple device. Individual mechanical impulses are applied to the outer skin (1) separated by intervals and in synchronised groups using a pulsed electromagnetic field, the synchronised groups corresp. to cross-sections of the object. Each mechanical impulse is a sinusoid of duration between 10 power minus 5 and 10 power minus 2 seconds with a duty cycle between 10 power minus 2 and 10 power minus 1.
