Packaged unit to disinfect drinking water esp. on trains - using solenoid valve for automatic dosing with chlorine ion soln.

The plant has a storage vessel for a reagent contg. chlorine ions etc. The reagent is injected into a close circuit distributing the drinking water. The concn. of reagent in the water is automatically measured and the result signalled to an electronic controller which regulates the rate at which an injector delivers reagents into the circuits. The automatic measurement of reagent concn. is now an ion measuring cell fitted in a bypass of the distribution circuit. The electronic controller actuates a solenoid valve which is opened at a frequency and for durations which inject reagent to a required concn. The ion measuring cell is pref. a twin electrode current measuring instruments. The reagent is pref. a dilute soln. of calcium hypochlorite. The concn. of chlorine in the distribution circuit is pref. controlled at about 0.1 mg/l. The reagent storage vessel is pref. held at 150-300 mbars. A vibrocompressor is pref. used to obtain this pressure. The installation is compact, efficient and reliable. No supply of free chlorine is required. The plant operation is unaffected by vibration and jolting such as experienced on a railroad train.
