The transformer's output is independent of the applied load and comprises two magnetic circuits (2,4) which are typically rectangular. The adjacent limbs (6,7) of the circuits serve as cores of respective windings, one of the cores (1) is an input winding, while the other (3) is a regulating winding. The output winding (5) is wound about the first two windings. When the regulating winding is open circuited, electromotive forces induced in the cores cancel one another, and so output voltage is induced in the output winding. When the regulating winding is short-circuited by a switch, a maximum voltage is induced in the output winding. Continually and rapidly pulsing the switch in the open and closed positions with varying mark to space ratios will provide a varying output voltage.
