An ultrasonic fault location device has a probe emitting and receiving ultrasound to and from the test piece. The probe is mounted on a motor-driven carrier moving parallel to the test surface. It conducts full automatic testing of welds and neighbouring areas with fully automatic processing of the fault location data. The drive system (23) is connected to a processor (7) contg. the probe (1a) and display sections (5,6,50,60). The processor sends motor (23x,23x,10) control signals (DVx,DVy,DVr) for probe (1a) positioning on a scan pattern. The probe position is stored with a corresp. received ultrasonic wave amplitude and the fault evaulation, if any, elated to a position. Further positional and fault evaluation data are assembled on a detected fault using further control signals moving the probe in a fine scan pattern.
