Amperometric determn. of free bromine in soln. - contg. free and combined bromine, using difference in readings obtd. before and after adding agent to convert free bromine to bromide
In a process for determn. of the free bromine content of a soln. contg. free and combined bromine, esp. bromamines, a first sample of the soln. is analysed amperometrically for total bromine. A second amperometric determn. is carried out on a second sample of the soln. which has previously been treated with a chemical reagent (I) which reacts selectively with the free bromine to convert it into bromide. The difference between the two results gives the free bromine content. Pref. (I) is a nitrite and the amperometric analysis is carried out by adding an iodide to the soln. and measuring the resulting concn. of iodine produced. Process is esp. useful for determn. of the free bromine content of chlorinated sea water, which is a measure of its germicidal activity. Process allows differentiation between this and total bromine, some of which may be present as bromamines, which have very low germicidal activity. Process is esp. useful for analysis fo swimming pool water.
