Determn. of free bromine in soln. - contg. free and combined bromine, by colorimetry or titration before and after adding an agent to convert free bromine to bromide
Determn. of free bromine in soln. - contg. free and combined bromine, by colorimetry or titration before and after adding an agent to convert free bromine to bromide
In a process for determn. of the free bromine content of a soln. contg. free and combined bromine, a first sample of the soln. is analysed for total oxidant by adding a coloured reactant (I) followed by colourimetric or titrimetric determn. with a reducing liq. which causes the colour to disappear. A second determn. is carried out on a second sample of the soln. after treatment with a chemical reagent (II) which reacts selectively with free bromine to transform it into bromide. The difference between the two results gives the free bromine content. Process is esp. useful for determn. of the free bromine content of chlorinated sea water, which is a measure of its germicidal activity, as distinct from combined bromine, e.g. in the form of bromamines, which have low germicidal activity. Process is esp. useful for analysis of swimming pool water.
