Pulley system driving alternator and water pump - includes electromagnetic clutch changing driving speed at higher engine speed reducing range of speeds for auxiliary equipment
The system for driving auxiliary equipment on a car engine includes a wheel (4) attached to the motor drive shaft (2), and a wheel (5) attached to the cam shaft (3) turning at half the speed of the main drive shaft. A belt (6) joining these two wheels is tensioned by a further wheel (7). One additional piece of equipment is driven by a second belt (8) lying in a second channel around the main shaft wheel (4), and a movable wheel (9). The water pump (11) is driven by a belt (10) on the cam shaft wheel. For low speeds the wheel (4) is solidly linked to the main drive shaft and the auxiliary equipment is driven at related speeds. For higher speeds - for example over 2000 r.p.m. the link between this wheel and shaft is removed by a relay operated electromagnetic clutch. The speed of the belt falls until it is controlled at a lower speed by the cam shaft wheel turning at half the speed.
