The self balancing lifting yoke is used for slinging loads with different centres of gravity and comprises a rigid T frame (10) in which the stroke (10C) is perpendicular to the bar (10A,10B). Each frame section is hollow and carries a trolley (50,50A,50B) running on two casters (52) to which cable slings can be attached by hooks (57,57A,57B). The trolleys are adjusted to an appropriate position by engaging a pawl (60,60A,60B) into a rack (61,61A,61B). The frame is balanced by the movement of cylinders (22,22A,22B) which are position controlled by mercury switches to alter the length of support cables (34,34A,34B) and maintain a horizontal attitude.
