Welding manganese steel to another steel - by butt welding austenitic material to the steels and forming a lamellar perlite structure by cooling weld under pressure
Welded joint between a Mn-based stainless steel casting (I) and another lightly alloyed steel workpiece contg. 0.2-0.9% C (II) is produced by welding an austenitic intermediate material (III) which does not become fragile during welding or heat treatment to (I), heat treating and then welding (II) to (III). (III), which has the compsn. 0.05-0.15% C, 14-17% Cr, 6-12% Fe, 1-4% Mn, 67-78% Ni and 1-4% Mo, is first butt-welded to (I) and cut to a thickness of 5-20 mm after which it is annealed in soln. and quenched in water. (III) is then butt- welded to it while cooling (I) and the zone between (II) and (III) cooled at a rate decreasing from 80 to 10 deg. K per mm while pressing so as to obtain a transformation to finely lamellar perlite.
