The furnace consists of a long chamber provided with thermal insulation. Two rows of workpieces (11) travel through the furnace in opposite directions, so the pieces travelling in one row towards a heating zone are preheated by pieces leaving a second heating zone. In the pref. furnace, one or two induction heating coils are located at the middle of the long chamber, so a combined preheating and cooling chamber (B,C) can be located on either side of the coil(s). The two chambers (B,C) pref. each contain a fan aiding heat transfer between the two rows of pieces (11). Pieces (11) are e.g. carbon electrodes, 600 mm dia. x 3 metres long, heated to 2800 deg. C so they are graphitised before being used in steelworks.
