System includes individual detectors carried by people working in a radioactive environment - particularly where they may be subject to gamma or X-radiation. Each portable dosemeter includes a detector of the ionising rays and a preamplifier receiving the detector output. The preamplifier output is fed through a signal shaping circuit to a discriminator providing calibrated pulses. A programmed divider then reduces the frequency of the pulses and they are then counted and the result stored A data transmitting section is interfaced with a central data collecting unit at intervals to collate the radiation data. The interface comprises a capacitive coupling, one plate of which is on the individual unit while the second plate is on the central unit. Problems with oxidised, dirty or worn contacts are avoided.
