The manhole is fitted with a flange which has a flat top that can be closed off with a blank flange. The flange has a cylindrical part which is curved to intersect the curved surface of the vessel. The joint is covered with a ring made from neoprene and shaped in such a way as to form a seal around the base of the cylinder. The material is sufficiently flexible to form a seal under all conditions of expansion of the vessel. The width of the neoprene joint is sufficient to maintain a seal.
