The appts. uses a number of accelerometers whose outputs are sealed and related by electronic processing circuits to movements of a drop of mercury giving the inclination. A cup assembly, firmly fixed into a float, contains a drop of mercury (12). A number of accelerometers (204,205,206) are mounted around the cup to form a concentric and coplanar assembly. Signals from the accelerometers are scaled and related to apparent movement of the drop of mercury produced by horizontal acceleration of the bouy. The resultant values are used to correct the indications from the measuring instrument to eliminate horizontal acceleration. After electronic processing only the inclination is recorded.
