Alkali metal hydroxide prodn. - using catalyst and alkali metal amalgam pool with hearth vibration to prevent formation of mercury butter

Method for prodn. of an aq. soln. of alkali metal hydroxide is described in which a pool of alkali metal amalgam in continuous movement around the bottom of the container is decomposed in the presence of a catalyst, wherein the bottom of the container is vibrated, esp. transversely, either the whole of the bottom simultaneously and uninterruptedly, or as a number of distinct parts, vibrated separately. The gelling of the amalgam to form mercury butter is eliminated, thus removing the need for frequent stoppages to remove mercury butter deposits in the circuit.
