The drum has a piston enclosing the separation and solids chamber and controlling the ejection ports in the drum casing. This allows partial or total drainage as desired. A closing chamber is divided into several compartments one behind the other in the radial direction and connected by passages. It can be supplied with sealing fluid. The drain passage of the outermost compartment contains a centrifugal valve, opened when fluid is delivered. For total drainage, one or more drain valves (15) are provided at the drum periphery, connected to drain passages (13,14) from the outer ends of the innermost and outermost compartments (8,9). For partial drainage there are other valves (21) at the periphery, whose drain passage (22) is connected to a passage (19) from the inlet to the outermost compartment, and to a passage (23,23') from the radially outermost end of the innermost compartment. This passage contains a throttle (24,24').
