PURPOSE:To carry out the optical resolution of DL-pantolactone in high rate of resolution, without loss of the substrate, by using a hydrolase produced by microorgnisms belonging to Rhodotorula genus. CONSTITUTION:DL-Pantolactone is treated with a hydrolase produced by microorganisms belonging to Rhodotorula gneus, e.g. Rhodotorula rubra IFO-0696, etc., at 25-40 deg.C and about 7 pH. Only L-pantolactone is hydrolyzed to L-pantoic acid without giving any change to D-pantolactone.
