PURPOSE:To obtain a liquefied oil having a high formation of light oil in high yield inexpensively with preventing the production of by-product gases, by preheating slurry comprising coal, a specific amount of sulfur-iron type catalyst having a specified composition, and a medium oil, blending it with hydrogen, reacting then at high temperature under high pressure. CONSTITUTION:The tank 1 for preparing slurry is charged with the coal A, 1.5- 6wt% calculated iron atom based on water-free and ash-free coal of the sulfur- iron type catalyst B comprising sulfur-iron, sulfur-reduced iron, sulfur-iron compound, or their mixed system, having a molar ratio of sulfur/iron of 1.5-7.0, and the medium oil C, they are processed into slurry, preheated by the slurry preheater 3, and the preheated slurry is blended with the hydrogen J which is preheated by the gas preheater 4 by the preliminary reactor 5, to give a preliminary reaction product. This preliminary reaction product is reacted by the reactor 6 at high temperature under high pressure, and the reaction products are passed through the cooler 7 separated into the light oil D, the middle oil E, the heavy oil F, and the residue G by the vapor-liquid separator 8, the liquid-solid separator 10, and the distillation device 11.
