As shown in Fig. 1, the mixture is passed through a moving filter band 7 which absorbs all the oil but is highly permeable to water, e.g. a band made of polypropylene wool, the band then passing through a detector which includes a light source 11 and a photo-electric cell 15 to detect colour change of the filter band. The band may alternatively be passed through a capacitor. The band may be impregnated with an oil-soluble colour substance so that refined oils may be detected. As shown, the mixture is made to pass through the band both ways, by means of a drive 8, so that unwanted particles are removed from the band when the mixture flows down through it. A second photo-electric cell 36 is provided to detect the absence of the filter band.
