A job identifier and a key identifier, which are transmitted to the system by means of DTMF signals, are selected by a station (N1) which initiates the remote management and remote maintenance in a centrally controlled telephone switching system, in particular a centrally controlled telephone switching (exchange) system. The authorisation of the initiating station (N1) is checked in the originating system by means of AC pulses or code signals which are generated by corresponding conversion devices at the ends of the connection lines. Only thereafter is the actual data exchange between the initiating station (N1) and the system carried out. Transmitting and receiving means of initiating stations (N1) are co-used in this way for remote management and remote maintenance. IMAGE
