The appts. consisting of a sedimentation vessel with an overflow, has a bundle of plates, between th overflow and the feed point, such that the deposit which accumulates on the plates is discharge to the bottom of the vessel. A device for pushing the deposit towards the bottom outlet is fitted below the plates. The plates are inclined and parallel and the bundles may be enclosed by lateral plates. They are arranged in rings and touch one another so as to prevent liq. passing between two neighbouring bundles. Baffles may be fitted up stream of the plates, direction the liq. towards them. The density of the slidge taken out and its level in the vessel are measured and the values used to regulate the quantity taken out per unit of time and the speed of movement of the device for pushing the deposit towards the bottom outlet. The appts. enables fine-grained solids to be sepd. from a liquid more effectively, and high concns. of thick liquor to be obtd.
