Flocked, foam coated, water vapour permeable, bacterial barrier - from microporous plastic film coated with foamed latex, and flocked fibres

A water vapour permeable, bacterial barrier having the appearance of fabric, and being capable of filtering bacteria comprises a microporous plastic film coated on at least one surface with a foamed latex polymer, and flocked fibres on the exterior surface of the foamed latex polymer. Pref. the plastic is an olefin polymer esp. isotactic polypropylene or high density polyethylene; is coated on both surfaces; the max. pore size of the film is 0.2 micron and the moisture vapour transmission rate is at least 100 pref. 250g. per 100 square inches per 24 hrs.. The barrier pref. includes a fibrous reinforcing web esp. a fibrous spun bonded web, which is pref. adjacent to the film. The bacterial barrier is of low cost, light wt., adequate strength to withstand fabrication and is suitable for use in prodn.of surgical drapes and gowns.
