A process for the carbonisation of workpieces and for their heat treatment without affecting the carbon content, in which the workpieces are exposed in a furnace to the effect of a gas mixture formed from an intermittently flowing organic liquid and further components, characterised in that the organic liquid ist fed intermittently directly into the furnace to the gas mixture which acts upon the workpieces, or that, in addition to the direct addition of the organic liquid, a part of the further components is fed into the furnace also intermittently, the latter being fed into the furnace either directly or mixed with the organic liquid.
